Sam Michael Fox‘s father Michael Andrew Fox professionally known as Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American retired actor. Sam’s grandfather was a 25-year veteran of the Canadian Forces who later became a police dispatcher, while his wife, Phyllis Piper, was a payroll clerk and an actress.
His father is an Irish, English, and Scottish descent. His maternal great-grandmother was from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Because of his father’s job, Michael J. Fox and his family lived in many cities and towns across Canada. When the family finally settled in Burnaby, a large suburb in Vancouver, his father retired in 1971. His father died of a heart attack on 6 January 1990 while his mother died later in September 2022.
For education, Sam’s father attended Burnaby Central Secondary school, which now has a theatre named after him at Burnaby South Secondary.
When Sam’s father was 15 years old, he got cast and starred in the Canadian television series Leo and Me produced by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Michael and his wife, Tracy Pollan met on the set of Family Ties when she played his girlfriend in the sitcom. The couple got married on 16 July 1988, at West Mountain Inn in Arlington Vermont. They have four children.
In 1991, when Michael was filming the movie Doc Hollywood, he displayed symptoms of early-onset Parkinson’s disease and was diagnosed shortly after. He became an advocate for finding a cure and he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000 to help fund the research.Â
Sam Michael Fox‘s father has made a lot of achievements including being five times winner of Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award.
He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010, along with being inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2000 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002. For his advocacy of a cure for Parkinson’s disease, he received an honorary doctorate in 2010 from the Karolinska Institute.
