What happened to Susan Lombardi?

Susan Lombardi was born on 13 February 1947 in New York, USA to her parents Vince Lombardi and Marie Lombardi. She was not the only child of the family, Susan had an older brother called Vince Lombardi Jr. She was five years younger than her brother, Vince Jr. Susan was 73 years old when she, unfortunately, passed away in Atlantic Beach, Florida, United States. She left behind three children and four grandchildren. The main cause of her death was not made public.

Early Life of Susan

Susan Lombardi and her family moved to Green Bay in 1959 when she was 12 years old. The young Susan attended St.Joseph Academy in Green Bay, an all-girls school that was eventually merged with other schools to create Notre Dame Academy High School.

Susan was described to be very crafty. She could sew and also loved to make things and sell them at craft fairs. She loved football too. She was also an avid fan of the Packers and reconnected with some of the former players from the years of her father when she moved back to the area.

Speaking in an interview with Press-Gazette editor Tony Walter at the Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, where the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 

This is wonderful,” Susan Lombardi said of the Super Bowl experience. “It makes me think that when we had home games (in Green Bay), I’d go someplace with my friends to get away from my parents, and then we’d caravan to the game. Now we’re going to bring that (Lombardi) trophy to where it belongs.”

Susan moved back to Jacksonville in the early 1980s, but she returns to Green Bay from time to time. In 2013, she came there to promote her father, Vince Lombardi’s  Legendary Sports Bar, and Grill at Oneida Casino in Ashwaubenon.

“My sister and I and her granddaughters meant everything to her,” said Susan’s daughter Maggie Lombardi, who also lives in Jacksonville. She loved the water and boating, She was very crafty. She could sew and loved to make things and sell them at craft fairs. Obviously, football was a predominant part of her life.”

Susan Lombardi’s paternal great-grandparents emigrated from Salerno, Italy while her maternal great-grandparents emigrated from Vietri di Potenza Basilicata. Susan’s father was the eldest out of five siblings, which includes Madeleine, Harold, Claire, and Joe. Vince and his wife’s clan settled in Sheepshead Bay entirely. 

Vince Lombardi’s family were members of St.Mark’s Catholic Church, and Vince himself was an altar boy. Going to church was a mandatory task for Vince on Sundays and there will be a compulsory family dinner with his extended family members, friends, and local clergy.

How did Susan Lombardi’s parents meet?

Vince Lombardi and her wife Marie meet through his roommate. In 1934 fall, Vince Lombardi’s roommate Jim Lawlor introduced him to his cousin’s relative Marie Plantiz. The couple fell in love and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.

However, when Susan Lombardi’s mother Marie announced her ardent desire to marry Vince, her father did not like the idea of his daughter marrying the son of an Italian butcher from Brooklyn. Though Susan’s maternal grandfather was against their marriage, they got married on 31 August 1940 nonetheless. 

He seemed preoccupied with football even on their honeymoon, and cut it short to get back to Englewood … ‘I wasn’t married to him for more than one week’, she later related, ‘when I said to myself, Marie Planitz, you’ve made the greatest mistake of your life.’

His wife’s first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. This resulted in Marie turning into a heavy drunk. In 1942, their son Vincent Henry Lombardi Jr was born and five years later Susan their daughter was born. 

Both of Susan’s parents are also dead

Susan Lombardi’s father died in Washington, D.C. at 7:12 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 1970, surrounded by her mother, grandparents, her brother, and Vince’s six grandchildren. He was 57. Her mother Marie Lombardi also dead of a prolonged lung ailment at the age of 66 and was buried alongside the grave of her husband. She died on April 17, 1982, in West Palm Beach, Florida, United States
